It’s beyond “Sports Idol.” One member is personally doing hat tricks as a soccer player running across the field, and another member is working as the director of a rhythmic gymnastic gala show. It’s an enthusiastic action beyond the level of hobby or appearance as a friend. Idol group JYJ from DBSK’s active crossover into sports is catching people’s attention.
JYJ’s Cross-over into Sports
JYJ is participating as a member of Park Jisung’s charity soccer Asian Dream Cup, which will be held on June 15th at Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam. After participating as a coaching staff in boyhood clinic on the 14th, they are scheduled to perform on 15th, the day of the game, at half-time. Being passionate soccer-lovers and fans of Park Jisung, JYJ themselves volunteered for participation despite their busy world tour schedule.
Furthermore, JYJ’s Kim Jaejoong recently transformed into the director for Sohn Yeonjae’s rhythmic gymnastics gala show. Kim Jaejoong, who showed off his touch as the overall director for JYJ’s Asia Tour, is participating as the director of ‘LG Whisen Rhythmic All Stars 2011’ which will be held on June 11~12th at the special stage in Hwajung Gymnastics of Korea University. It’s become known that he is involved in directing all parts [of the performance], including music selection and arrangement, stage effects, choreography, and costume styling. He is showing great passion for his new job as a director, personally watching various rhythmic gymnastics videos to separately learn about the sport and thinking about ways to combine popular appeal with artistic expression. Because Son Yeonjae returned on the 17th after completing her appearance in the World Cup series for three years straight and JYJ is currently in Canada for the North American Tour which begins on the 20th, the director and the athlete have not yet met. Kim Jaejoong and Son Yeonjae is exchanging opinions for the best performance through JYJ’s choreography team leader’s e-mail.
Why did JYJ become a Sports-Idol?
What’s the reason for idol JYJ’s such active participation in the area of sports such as soccer and rhythmic gymnastics? It’s first because all members are passionate sports fans. JYJ’s Kim Junsu and Park Yuchun are athletes in Suwon Samsung Blue Swing’s fifth club FC MEN. FC MEN’s captain Kim Junsu, especially, has skills as good as those of an actual soccer player. In fact, it’s as good as him being able to record a hat trick during his opening match with Incheon Design Women’s Soccer Team. JYJ’s participation in Park Jisung’s charity soccer event is also because of their endless love for soccer. Of course, JYJ’s great popularity in Vietnam and other Asian areas probably had a positive affect on the organizer’s strategy for success. Meanwhile, while seemingly having nothing connecting him with rhythmic gymnastics, the reason for JYJ Kim Jaejoong’s association with Son Yeonjae is the following. The agency in charge of advertising idol group JYJ and Son Yeonjae’s gala show is the same. During the process of obtaining consultation regarding the directing of Son Yeonjae’s gala show, Kim Jaejoong naturally became a participant. Kim Jaejoong, who has been greatly interested in stage directing, showed interest in the project, and great interest was created in a relatively lesser-known rhythmic gymnastics gala show with the news of idol star Jaejoong’s participation.
Recently, JYJ’s appearance in KBS’s music program ‘Music Bank’ was blocked because of their lawsuit with DBSK’s management company. Afterward, KBS did turn their position around, stating “[they] can appear whenever they release a new song,” but a lawsuit with a major management company can only act as a burden until the final decision is made by the courts. As shown through TV programs such as “Start Dream Team” (KBS) and “Idol Start Track and Field”(MBC), the image of “sports idol” helps greatly with popularity. Having been forced to quarrel with the broadcasting companies, JYJ has chosen a smart detour with meeting fans directly through the world tour, meeting them in different ways through dramas and musicals, and meeting them in new ways through sports.
